There are a lot of REALLY terrible bands called Echo Lake, just forewarning you on the premise that you love them, and go hunting for more info. This Echo Lake is a hazy, shoegaze outfit garnering a lot of JAMC comparisons. They don’t sound anything like the Jesus and Mary Chain. FYI. They do, however, sound a lot like Slowdive. I’m the ultimate psych/shoegaze/dreampop fanatic so they’re definitely up my ally, and fit right in with my desolate gray day winter depression vibes. Definitely a LISTEN WITH HEADPHONES kind of band. They’re kind of elusive so I don’t really have a place to send you for more, I could link you to another really crummy band called Echo Lake, but that would only be funny, and not very constructive.

Slowdive: Souvlaki

Slowdive had already broken up by the time I first heard their song “When the Sun Hits.” They’re one of a handful of bands that I missed out on seeing live, because I was either too late in finding them, or even worse, I was too young and my parents wouldn’t allow it. They say timing is everything; my timing has always been a little off.

Shoegaze is alive and well in Canada – Neon Canyon proves it so. Experimental, and well, gaze-inducing, Neon Canyon will remind you of Slowdive… le sigh. Download their new EP for free here.

Slowdive was the quintessential shoegaze band of the1990’s. Boy in Static’s major influences were Slowdive and other legendary shoegaze band, My Bloody Valentine. So what do you get when you take members of Slowdive and Boy in Static’s Alexander Chen? Shoegaze brilliance, that’s what! Or, rather The Consulate General, whose debut album, Person Number, came out earlier this month.
