Pitchfork: Day 3

Pitchfork Music Festival 890x350 Pitchfork: Day 3

SUNDAY, JULY 18TH

I opened Sunday with CAVE’s fantastic set. CAVE was one of the Chicago-openers and a great choice on the part of Pitchfork; their set was flawless and had some serious organ shredding. Opposite CAVE was an equally fantastic Alla whose latin-infused ambient sound was perfectly quaint but not quite what I was looking for. After I finished surveying the opening bands, I headed over to the Balance Stage to scope out Best Coast.

Checking in with Sleigh Bells

sleighbells1 Checking in with Sleigh Bells

Brooklyn: check.  Danceable: check.  Guitarist from Poison the Well: check?  If you haven’t heard Sleigh Bells yet, you have been living in a hole (or even more possibly, a hole filled with Creed CDs).  After releasing their debut full-length a couple weeks back, Sleigh Bells went from Pitchfork Buzz Band to media darling.  Getting past all of the quirks and highlighted indie nuances (living in Brooklyn, wearing ray-bans, etc.), Sleigh Bells has actually delivered an effort that deserves attention. Treats, its first LP, is a bi-polar romp through uncharted territory.  The duo tackles pop in a new light, meditating on the bubblegum qualities of harsh noise and the appeal of well-toned electronic drum tracks under delicate vocals.

Pitchfork 2010: Where to start

Pitchfork+Music+Festival+2010+PMF10logo 4C Pitchfork 2010: Where to start
Kicking off this year’s coverage of Pitchfork Music Festival is what I have deemed the “Pitchfork Quicklist.” Looking at the list of bands playing Pitchfork this year is probably one of the most overwhelming things I’ve done in years. For many, difficult choices are everywhere, while, for others, it’s just a jumble of undiscovered bands laden with old classics. Whatever the case is for you, I have compiled a list of suggestions based on broad music categories.  A complete schedule will follow all suggestions, alongside a very crude “bubble-style” outline that you can’t find on Pitchfork’s website.
