Total Control – Paranoid Video

Somewhere in the breeding patterns of the 80s noise punk movements and the synth head movement birthed the synth punks Total Control. Drawing influence from what seems Futuristik, Screamers, and Perhaps Devo, they bring to the table a crunched up no wave dancefloor numbers. Sawtooth leads over frantic punk beats interloping into a obnoxious yet capturing piece. The building progressive Kraftwerk leads into chip-tune solos like a busted cartage game. Paranoid video is a track you would find on the mixtape of some rebelous adolescent from a post apocalyptic timeline.

While one might be tricked into believing that Vomit Heat is a collective effort. However, contrary to popular opinion it is merely a one man band, a German bloke named Nils. While Nils describes his jams as alternating “between drone, ambient and doom on the one hand but also no-wave, noise rock and shit-/shoegaze,” he nevertheless manages to make it all into his own mulch. An arbiter of his talent, Vomit Heat’s ability to effortlessly genre hop allows his music to rise above the rest of the bedroom detritus out there.

Mazing Vids have been diagnosed with a specific type of psychosis. This particular psychosis has been known to affect 3 out of every 4 persons in the five borough area. Years of exposure to infinitely, dense amounts of glass, cement, and taxi cabs have been the sole cause of said mental disorder.

Mx-80 sound are the band no one has heard about but everyone rips off–I’m looking at you Sonic Youth. Hailing from the culturally insular area of Indiana in the 70’s, Mx-80 sound created the blue print for the now famous No-Wave scene in new york. For a band from Indiana, one wouldn’t expect all the paranoia and dread that these guys manage to wrangle out of their guitars. Although the vocals are a little flat, often spoken, Mx-80’s start and stop guitars coupled with the occasional skronking sax sounds just as fresh as it did thirty years ago.

Much to the chagrin of the male psyche, the phrase “Balls to the Wall” has nothing to do with male genitalia. Rather, the phrase was coined during World War Two  as the accelerator in the aircraft had round tops that looked like balls. To put the “balls to the wall” was to push the levers all the way forward, making the aircraft fly as fast as possible; it now means. “to carry out an action as quickly as possible.”

Despite it being the year 2010, Washington, D.C.’s Weird War refuse to acknowledge this reality. Instead, Weird War have chosen to live in a different dimension. One in which linear time isn’t the harsh reality that we are all too familiar with. In the realm of Weird War, time and culture are statically held in place by the eternal and incessant intercourse of the 60’s and 80’s. Instead of wasting oxygen, humans have adapted to breathing a different sort of air comprised of fuzzed out, surf rifts. Time is measured not by the procession of the sun but rather an incessant yet mildly funky bass line played by the No-Wave luminary James Chance. No need to worry about one’s wardrobe for the day as everyone is provided with Beatle Boots and mod haircuts. Love is free and funky, cool is effortless.

Janitor- Rubbernecker

Janitor is philosophically committed to  intonation, aggressive dance, digital sampling, and high volumes.  Owen Gardner, who also plays in Black Vatican, produces the music.  While Owen has been guided by the voices of contemporary non-western music, Scott from Janitor is a committed Gurdijeffian, seeking psychic liberation through transgressive exploration of childhood traumas. Janitor is  firmly planted in Baltimore, and nurtured by the city’s music and violence.  Download their song “Rubbernecker” here.

Karen Cooper Complex – Beeswax

The Karen Cooper Complex is a six-piece band formed in 1970.  Their music was a marriage between rock and free jazz. The group of outsider artists  played loosely structured, improvisational rock that found itself in the realm of  the avant garde . Karen got pregnant and the band never played live  — in fact, from that point, they never played again at all. The member from the group Frank Daniel died of complications of Type I diabetes in 2004,  this volume of songs has been digitized  as a salute to his memory and in hopes that someone out there will listen to this music and say “Good work, Frank. Thanks.” We are left with this wonderful album, download it here.

I picked thru Bandcamp.com and found these cool albums. Bandcamp is cool and all but there are no search options, there isn’t even a search box. Its a bummer because it is like a needle in a haystack if you are looking for a particular band. Stay tuned we will be bringing you more free music in the future. They are in no particular order.

Kraus is from New Zealand, their sound is a nice blend of weird medival synth sounds, beefheart guitar, and lo-fi drumming. This music has a nostalic feel to it, one minute you are listening to something that sounds like its from the  mid 70’s kraftwerk era, and then the next song goes to a  heavy guitar driven 60’s psych song. The Sediment Club- Orphans Tongue

Check out this funky no wave band from Brooklyn. Their sound is  reminicant of DNA with scuzzy guitar randomness, crazy nerdy punk vocals on top of funky drums patterns and tweaked out organ chords.
