Most music aficionados are already familiar with the delightful label Mexican Summer. It is a bit hard not to due to their roster of indie heavyweights like Kurt Vile and Young Prisms. Looking at the list of  the label’s produced albums one cannot help but pause and wonder with appreciation the innovative talent this label is putting out there for us to enjoy. One of the most refreshing and exciting aspects of the label is the fact that they don’t pigeonhole themselves with one particular sound. Yes, they do boast a bevy of blog favorite bands like Real Estate and Ariel Pink, but also are on a continually lookout for new talent in fields ranging from folk, electronic, and indie pop. Hopefully this type of summer will continually year round.

Crowds at SXSW

Surreal doesn’t even really begin to describe the experience of SXSW, the festival that twenty-five years earlier began on lawns and small venues around the University of Texas campus and has now grown to overtake the entirety of Austin. Although the festival also encompasses an Interactive and Film portion, what the vast majority of the masses descending on Austin come for is the four-day, jam-packed, non-stop drinking musical extravaganza that SXSW is most known for.

Airbird: Part of The Game

Airbird out of good ‘ol Brooklyn continues the trend of tribal beats mixed with synths and faded out vocals. Providing a unique electro cover of The Beach Boy’s Surfer Girl, Airbird transfers the feeling of a face full of sunshine as you lay on a warm, sandy beach with his lilting echoing vocals and dancey beats. A track to defiantly pull out when those mid-winter blues hit. Part of The Game provides a heavy pounding drumbeat mixed with a more rock jazz keyboard and a deep tenor creeps in. Defiantly a track to put on when feeling a bit down and contemplative.

Juxtaposition to the recent wave of happy-go-lucky surf-rock bands is the slightly scuzzy and darkly haunting vibe of dark pop. One of the most intriguing to emerge on the scene is The Soft Moon. Although they hail from sunny San Francisco, a dark underground feel in the hallmark of their sound. Tracks like When It’s Over begin with a slow and steady one, two drumbeat and are accompanied by a straightforward guitar hook. The vocals receive a heavy dose of reverb as they blend with shadowy instrumentals. Midway through the track the addition of rising and falling feedback comes in and adds a savage vibe until the track fades out with a medley of noise. The song Phantoms supplies a quicker tempo, with Joy Division influenced instrumentals from the continual steady drumbeat. Vocals jump in and out adding to the frenzied build of guitar feedback.

Portland dream-pop Blouse provide a meditative slow jam on Firestarter with plenty of sparkly and swirl that would make it the perfect backdrop to any John Hughes classic. Strong female vocals layered over upbeat synths and clean feedback. Lyrics ruminate about ambles through cathedral stairs. The steady drumbeat that kicks up towards tracks end mixed with the low bass neatly ties Firestarter.

Myrrh-N’ajzabi Nation

When you go to this Myrrh’s myspace start from the bottom, with their best songs, Celebrate Umali Dal and Way Body Moves.  This groove up band has a lot of potential, but I found the distorted-to-shit echo transformer voice on every song on this page.  If you like dancey- druggy-don’t give a shit ecstasy music, this group is for you.

Secrets – THE SIGN (Ace of Base cover)

Think about what would happen if someone took all of your favorite songs and put them on one album. Cool right? The best idea anyone has ever had, the mixtape of the effing year! Right? Now imagine that someone decided to take all of your favorite songs and cover them. Starting to become less of a cool idea? Sure it is. You decide that though less cool, it might not be the worst thing that has ever happened in the world. It may even (dare I say it)turn out to be alright. Right? (Kanye shrug) Maybe.

Alex Varanese is really cheeky. His fourteen piece series entitled “ALT/1977: We Are Not Time Travelers” is a clever, thoughtful look at what advertisements or pieces on technology would look like in the 1970s. It’s not just any technology that he uses. He has so-called time traveled in and used four vitally important pieces of technology commonly used today  (video game console, MP3 player, mobile phone and laptop) and placed them in the realm of the 1970s. It is the most efficient way of time travel since the Dolorean.
