Millions is the latest project from Randall Sena, a kind of musical mufasa for his hometown, having been in a slew of highly influencial bands to the area, and running his own DIY studio “certain Sparks’, on top of all that he rolls out these sensational lo fi pop gems. The songs are Frail yet the reckless abandon felt here is that of someone teetering on the edge of sanity. The songwriting in these songs reminesent of a kind of Nirvana pop sensiblity matched with the noise and raw energy of acts like the Pixies or yo la tengo.
J Pre – Synesthesia
In his press statement, J Pre even remarks, “Synesthesia is supposed to have a deep philosophical and emotional appeal to the fact that music can change moods.” How true that is. J Pre includes bits of pieces of reflective ambient beats with monologue samples similar to Boards of Canada, followed next by a heavy party beats the likes of Ratatat, to a jazz-esque sampling along the lines of Peanut Butter Wolf meets dj’ing software like Traktor.
Bleeding Fractals – The Acoustic Shirt EP
I’ve heard a lot about the development, promotion, and production of this album so I take this news with great excitement. It’s been awhile since any kind of release from Bleeding Fractals has been released and let me just say, the wait was worth it. With 35 mins of more produced and frankly a new directional approach, the Acoustic Shirt EP is a nice reminder of the classic, noodly Midwestern, emo rock that we have long been missing.
Legs Like Tree Trunks – S/T EP
To those of you familiar with the alternative, noodle rock with emo rock influences, you should know Legs Like Tree Trunks. Releasing their S/T nearly two months ago, the S/T EP is a great, reintroduction to the band you thought you knew. And believe me, you thought you knew them. Listen, Download, Share, Enjoy.
Public Dims – Vent Somewhere Else
Vent Somewhere Else by Public Dims I sit on a half assembled couch, sadly collapsing into the porch below, staring off aimlessly into the distance. You watch people stroll by in a daze, a blur of disillusions and plain exhaustion. It’s understandable and relatable, yet more importantly, I believe it demonstrates a certain sense of [...]
Stable Boys – Dionneing It
Dionneing it by Stable Boys Facebook appears to be one of my primary forms of receiving news now a days, sadly. Not particularly for world news, or business news, or anything along those lines: I still got The Economist, BBC, and Al Jazzera for that. But as far as music news, it helps. To illuminate [...]
Jet Set Sail/Ted Nguyent Summer Tour
Long Island to Baltimore, Jet Set Sail & Ted Nguyent will indulge heat exhausted kids to post-hardcore delight from Ted Nguyent followed by emo-alternative treasures by Jet Set Sail. Furthermore, I truly love the combination of these two bands: it feels like twin brothers, an angsty high school poet in the Mid West and an alcoholic pizza boy out of DC. With Ted Nguyent’s recent release, “Pizza and Regret”, and Jet Set Sails’ infamous, “Magnetic Mountain”, fans will have a nice blend og genres across the board, from math to lo-fi.
Hella – Tripper – Headless
When I heard that Hella is coming back from it’s hiatus to provide auditorial hallucinations, I was speechless. And as I should be, have you guys heard this stuff? The song “Headless” is a nice reminder that the Hold Your Horse Is Zach Hill Hella is far from gone. Hell, it just started.
Zorch – Cosmic Gloss/E.M.F.
I’ve always wanted to travel around the country. Yet honestly, Texas never made the cut as far as destinations worthy of going out to. Call it prejudices or pure ignorance but it felt like some kind of foreign country with it’s own customs, norms, and procedures. Most of that tends to be true, yet it [...]
Cousin Brian – 7″
I like moshing. I know i probably annoy the hell out of people around me when and if I start yet it feels like the best form of expression to the pure amount of energy surrounding you. You shake, you bounce, you ram into other bodies in a blur of sense and senselessness. Cousin Brian [...]
DirtyDave – Let’s Keep Things Nice & Filthy Clean
Expanding from house parties into the night life societies of venues such as Starlight Ballroom and the Blockley. DirtyDave has quickly adjusted his style from more heavily house influenced styles to vibrant Dubstep, Electronica. No set quite exemplifies this coming of force then “Let’s Keep Things Nice & Filthy Clean”. With well over 50 minutes of startlingly drops and metaphysical percussion lines, it should keep any fan well invested.
NarK – “Realize” & “Who’s to Blame” Acoustic Exclusives
Realize Who’s to Blame Climbing up couches and half broken chairs, I staple odd bits of old blankets and sheets over the windows in a desperate attempt to battle the light. I was not entirely sure what I was going to do: I only knew that it involved complete darkness. Sprinting around an obscure living [...]
1994! tour w/ Snowing & Algernon
Spring is coming in bloom and summer is only on the way. 1994!, Snowing, and Algernon can rock venues across the country, including the west coast, for a solid 2 months before the real world has to set in. And after that, who even necessarily says that reality has to set in?
Gracie – For Dylan, From Africa
A dreamwave, classic pop sound the likes of Sung Tongs Animal Collective meets Microcastle Deerhunter, Gracie’s release is both appropriate in its timing and context. For Dylan, From Africa has this beach haze aspect to it that will make you just want to lay out in the sun and laze. The point to take away is that Gracie’s For Dylan, From Africa reminds me of a sort of optimistic release of control. We do not know where we are going or how long it will take, but we sure as hell are enjoying the ride.
Slutever – Pretend to be Nice
“Philly Brat Punks. Like Clueless meets Beavis and Butthead with a side helping of girl anarchy.” Surprisingly, if you take a listen, you’ll realize how strangely true their biography is. A lo fi power punk with clear influences of garage goodness shine through with Slutever. Check out the soundcloud, blog, facebook, and all that jazz and I’ll see ya at the next show. It should be an interesting one.
Tera Melos @ First Unitarian Church
With a more focused approach to each song yet a desire to expand the horizon’s as far as what they stand for, Tera Melos showed an audience of devoted acolytes that they had not lost their force. So for all of those who love the “Melodies” Tera Melos, never fear, Tera Melos is still here. But for those who have been awaiting a new flavor, Tera Melos seems to have excelled where previous acts like Maps & Atlases and Women have struggled
Gross Ghost’s Wicked Game
A tropical, lo-fi euphoria, it is both edgy yet far-reaching, taking influences that take at least a couple listens to catch. Monks, Gang of Four, and Tyvek with a far more psychedelic feel are some that come to mind but feel free to discover for yourselves. Here’s to a delightfully Wicked Game.
Spike Jonze “The Suburbs”
Running a little over thirty minuets, “Scenes from the Suburbs” premiered at the SXSW with great anticipation and excitement. After all, one can certainly detect the teen angst in just about every release of Arcade Fire’s discography, yet to have it reinterpreted into a military, coming-of-age, post-modern thriller is something entirely unexpected. So my next question is: when the hell am I going to be able to check this out?
This is the Second Album of a Band called Adebisi Shank
Adebisi Shank is an in your face Math-Rock band with frequent metal influences. It is intricate and like an 80′s action movie climax, it’s uplifting yet aggressive as all hell.
