Millions is the latest project from Randall Sena, a kind of musical mufasa for his hometown, having been in a slew of highly influencial bands to the area, and running his own DIY studio “certain Sparks’, on top of all that he rolls out these sensational lo fi pop gems. What began originally as recordings and writing with local groups like Oso, Tall Tales, and Sparrows Gate, Randall has been honing down on his craft and Millions is the Outcome.

I recently underwent a road trip down south where I spent a lot of time driving through the fine state of Tennessee on a highway nicknamed “The Music Highway”. Given the amount of innovative bands emerging from the fair state of Tennessee the highway’s name makes perfect sense. One of those bands is Nashville’s psych-grunge, noise pop JEFF The Brotherhood, the brainchild of brothers Jake and Jamin Orrall. Given the full sound and energy emanating from their records, its quite impressive that it all comes from two dudes, a guitar, and a drum set. Since their formation in 2006, JEFF The Brotherhood have played alongside such acts as Sonic Youth and Ted Leo & The Pharmacists where one can only assume they held their own due to their powerful sound and swagger.

Fairly standard lo-fi punk could describe Straight Arrows sound, as if Stiff Little Fingers couldn’t afford proper recording equipment. There’s also a heavy attempt at countering the mainstream in their insistence to keep things as dirty as possible. While their efforts to pander to the garage crowd are quite embarassing, what’s annoying is these ironic intentions are exactly what this genre is about: acting like you don’t care about something.

Sacramento’s G. Green have an uncanny ability for crafting playful slacker post-punk executed with such rugged charm & vitality comparable to groups like the German Measles and Home Blitz.  Andrews unique vocals send vibezzz of loneliness & despair that reminisce of bratty high school feelin’s and TV teen romanticism. These scuzzy innovators are fast becoming my favorite guitar band with their infectious raw energy drawn from their DIY basement sound.  Get their 7″  I will Not Withdraw This Statement via Malt Duck records here and check their Myspace for other releases/info.

Ithaca, NY synth-weirdos We Are the Arm return to WFMU to unveil some new sounds from their upcoming release, “Togetherness” (Achord Records). Last time these mild-mannered chaps visited Jersey City, they performed paranoid post-punk numbers for the masses, but this time their sound has shifted closer to the Emerson, Lake, and Palmer/dance-funk end of the synth spectrum. Invaders from sears formed in 1986 in western conneticut, and released 2 albums before vanishing
in 1989. Rumor has it they are recording their 3rd album “I’m the prom queen”. Moby and
sonic youth have referenced Invaders from Sears as an influence for their own music. The Invaders recorded everything with
a 3 track portastudio that once belonged to peter frampton. Both of their albums can be described
as post new wave/proto indie pop. If you like Invaders From Sears, check out the band “Closet full of Fear” another band from Conneticut circa 1986.
