The website of this funky French Collective says it all:

Fashion. Art. Activism.

Awesome.

Led by the precocious Maroussia Rebecq, Andrea Crews marries Art and Fashion together through unique designs, one-off collaborations and vintage combos. As you could imagine, the outlets for this type of project are varied and elements of advertising and activism in public space pervade their oeuvre.

COLLECTIVE: “Nous Sommes Des Soleils”

zzzzx1 COLLECTIVE: Nous Sommes Des Soleils

Custom vibrators painted as Huey Louie and Dewey, bad quality videos, posters denouncing neon colors: you can count me in!

It seems to be a European thing to do: find like-minded people are form a kick ass creative collective. Enter Nous Sommes Des Soleils, which when translated from French into English means We are the suns – a play on words from the expression “Nous sommes désolés”, meaning We are sorry. A very apt choice of words considering this trio from Stuttgart, Germany, has nothing to apologize for! Adrian, Fabian and Marian (the Three ‘Ians’) chuck art, fashion, words, books and Happenings into a giant melting pot and stir vigorously. Their work is funny, quirky, sexy, bold and not to mention cheeky.

Literary tees-Out of Print Clothing

Out of Print Lolita tee

Meet the band t-shirt’s intellectual counterpart: the literary tee. Order one donning your favorite book from Out of Print Clothing, which includes tees and sweatshirts with classic titles such as William Burroughs’ “The Naked Lunch,” J.D. Salinger’s “Catcher in the Rye,” and Vladimir Nabokov’s “Lolita” (pictured above). The elementary school bookworm in me is vying for this Nancy Drew printed tee.

FASHION: Good Hoodie Gone Bad

cd haw101a blk 1 FASHION: Good Hoodie Gone Bad

This hoodie is bad, in the good way. One look at the appealing compilation of ruched and sheer fabric and you’ll never think of a sexy hoodie as an oxymoron again. Costume Dept. manages to kick the standard black hoodie up a few notches by opting for sleek sheer fabric. Edgy yet wearable, the sheer front also allows you to create your own look determined by what you wear under it. Go modest with a full coverage tank, or get a little wild-child with a mini-shirt or bandeau top. The slouchy fabric perfectly balances the sneaky entry of the peek-a-boo shoulders and open front. The difficulty of combining femininity with a relaxed and easy style is mastered in this piece. Get it here at 80’spurple.com, a California based online fashion boutique.

PHOTOGRAPHY: Charlie Engman’s expression of body

IDMag Engman2010 PHOTOGRAPHY: Charlie Engmans expression of body

In his commissioned work Charlie Engman captures the surreal result of a cultural saturated by stunningly ambiguous stylings. Engman, whose clients include, Urban Outfitters, I-D Magazine, Vogue Brazil, Marie Claire China and Collina Strada, photographs edgy fashion within contextually absurd settings outside of the realm of real time, developing striking figural images.
Engman’s own photography resounds a similar tone, as he photographs about the human body– he characterizes his own interest in the body, “Another major interest of mine is the body, specifically it’s dual function as a utilitarian object and emotional signifier, and it is often helpful to think about this functionality through exaggerated poses and extreme physiques…”

FASHION: Fashion with Google

YouTube Preview Image

This commercial created by Robbin Ingvarsson & Waldemar Wegelin makes Google a virtual closet. It’s cool because it utilizes all the search functions Google is known for but projected on the screen, these girls can try clothes on, sorta. This commercial,  launched in Japan,  is cool because it shows how the versatile the internet really is. It also shows how versatile Google is that it can not only be a wicked search engine but, if you’re bored at home and don’t have any money to buy new clothes, you can just get your fix while it’s projected onto your giant white wall.

Fashion’s favorite muse Chloe Sevigny partnered up with Opening Ceremony to create a collection for the house’s pre-spring 2011 season. Starting Dec. 13, the collection is available for exclusive an pre-sale online.

The line is signature Chloe but with a flirtier vibe — flared mini-dresses, chunky clogs and boots, patterned tights and oversize sunglasses. Sevigny also partnered up with the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation to create line of t-shirts donning her favorite works by the late photographer, who died in 1989 from complications of AIDS.

FASHION: Pepper + Pistol says goodbye

Pepper + Pistol dress

After six seasons, four years and eight collections, New York based indie label Pepper+Pistol is calling it quits. The label, whose line attracted the likes of musicians like Irish electro-pop singer Roisin Murphy, Natasha Khan of Bat for Lashes, and – I reluctantly add – Tyra Banks (does anyone else remember Tyra’s music video from ANTM?), was founded by fashion veteran Silvia Hillman and textile designer Katrin Wiens.

William S. Burroughs once wrote, “The junk merchant doesn’t sell his product to the consumer, he sells the consumer to his product. He does not improve and simplify his merchandise. He degrades and simplifies the client.” While Katie Eary’s Spring-Summer Collection is not junk, it certainly does degrade and simplify the client (or wearer).

FASHION: Saved By The Bell Brings Us Back

saved by the bell cast
Many of us remember watching Saved by the Bell after school, and wishing we had the amazing style they did. Even if it was ten years after the show stopped airing, and you saw a re-run. Oversized t-shirts, large prints layered with other prints, skinny leg jeans, many components that we see in today’s fashion trends.

Who would have guessed that in nearly twenty years Saved By The Bell’s pop culture style would be ‘in’ again. Thankfully, it is.
