While our society may have the past and the future, to the Hopi, everything is simply one: we do not necessarily live in the present so much as we live in the past, present, and future all in the same moment. Another way to understand this theory, though, is to simply take a listen through Portland’s own Grrrl Friend and their recent release, “Happening Now“. At times, you may feel as though you’ve bumped into the bastard cousin of The Jesus And Mary Chain and Sonic Youth. By the next song though, you’re looking at a mind trip the likes of Avey Tare pairing up with “They Threw Us All in a Trench and Struck a Monument on Top” Liars.

J Pre – Synesthesia
In his press statement, J Pre even remarks, “Synesthesia is supposed to have a deep philosophical and emotional appeal to the fact that music can change moods.” How true that is. J Pre includes bits of pieces of reflective ambient beats with monologue samples similar to Boards of Canada, followed next by a heavy party beats the likes of Ratatat, to a jazz-esque sampling along the lines of Peanut Butter Wolf meets dj’ing software like Traktor.
Bleeding Fractals – The Acoustic Shirt EP
I’ve heard a lot about the development, promotion, and production of this album so I take this news with great excitement. It’s been awhile since any kind of release from Bleeding Fractals has been released and let me just say, the wait was worth it. With 35 mins of more produced and frankly a new directional approach, the Acoustic Shirt EP is a nice reminder of the classic, noodly Midwestern, emo rock that we have long been missing.

Long Island to Baltimore, Jet Set Sail & Ted Nguyent will indulge heat exhausted kids to post-hardcore delight from Ted Nguyent followed by emo-alternative treasures by Jet Set Sail. Furthermore, I truly love the combination of these two bands: it feels like twin brothers, an angsty high school poet in the Mid West and an alcoholic pizza boy out of DC. With Ted Nguyent’s recent release, “Pizza and Regret”, and Jet Set Sails’ infamous, “Magnetic Mountain”, fans will have a nice blend og genres across the board, from math to lo-fi.
