Melted Toys – “Lost Connection”

NJ based record label Underwater Peoples has been expanding their talent search with manifest destiny in mind. Having first picked up Denver couple Tennis (now on Fat Possum), the label has fully made it to the West Coast with the addition of synth pop and a dash of Anglophobe trio Melted Toys. The group’s debut EP Washed & Dried will drop February 22. For a peek into their lush sound, check out the video for their song  Come On below, with its up-tempoish mid beat, echoed out vocals, and charming  swirly flow its sure to please.

Alps – Sail Away

Australia based ALPS might be one dude (Chris Hearn) but his wonderful mix folkish electric pop/rock is as lush and encompassing as any four piece outfit. Already having a collection of seven-inches/albums under his belt, Hearn just released a new one, Alps of New South Wails, and the haunting faintness of his emotion filled lyrics layered guitars and steady drums. The track I Get So High proves especially memorable and reminds the listener why straightforward and well-crafted songs are the bread and butter of the music world.

From Georgian duo Soft Powers we have a song quite different to the their alluringly glam and tightly wound “I Began To Cringe At Eight Ten”, which boasted bayonet guitar punches and MGMT style psychedelic falsetto. In contrast, “Mary Never Plays Our Songs” is a room-spinning ballad that gradually swells, consuming its own narrator, then unfolds wonderfully to reveal an epic prog refrain that stays with you well after the song is over. And of course there’s the, er, MGMT style psychedelic falsetto.

Side projects are the best, am I right or am I right? So-hot-right-now Brooklyn cuties Kevin Morby (Woods) and Cassie Ramone (Vivian Girls) have put their heads and sounds together to form a magical lo-fi surf-pop beast  that sounds like it was recorded in a garage and will make you want to bob your head while popping your bubblegum in, like, the best way possible. If you are looking for a little sonic summer fun to pretend away the winter months, look no further.

Ducktails: Hamilton Road

Although Matthew Mondanile makes chilled out relaxing tunes, the dude is anything but lazy. Not only does Mondanile play guitar for psychedelic beach combers Real Estate, he also fronts his own solo project Ducktails in which he takes a more ambient spin on the beach music sound. Under Ducktails, Mondanile has already released two albums, a self-titled one in May 2009 followed a few months later by Landscapes. January 18th will seen the release of his third album Ducktails III: Arcade Dynamics just in time to help us get through the remainder of the winter.

Wise Blood loops snippets of classic rock, sets them to booty beats and lays his own falsetto over the top. The results are alternate reality pop culture mosaics that owe as much to modern freaky loop acts like Panda Bear and Odd Nosdam as they do to the original material they chew up, sew together and blast out. 1. What is your photographic history? how did you end up becoming a photographer?
In Jr. high I went over a friends house and saw these sort of abstract photos on the the wall. That was the first time I remember seeing photography displayed as art and I knew, then, that I wanted to do photography someday. It took me a long time to get around to it though. There was a little dabbling in it throughout the years, but didn’t really shoot much until just before I moved to NY in 1998.
