When the eyes meet these beautifully hand crafted sculptures fabricated by German born Angelika Arendt they see the true meaning of craftsmanship. This masonic skill is not common by any means. She found the unique way of strategically montaging each of piece of polymer clay to fashion what looks to be replicas of coral reefs that live underwater in one of those tropical vacation locations.

Driving through Davis, California today I snapped a few shots of modern homes I came across. They were all within a mile or two of each other close to the UC Davis campus.  A few have  kept their original aesthetic and a handful have been restored to their original beauty. The majority of MCM homes in Davis have lost their original vibe though and are in desperate need of ‘modern’ makeovers,  here are few that made the cut, enjoy the photos!

For Kristen Schiele, presentation is definitely part of the package when she takes to creating something that’s never been put together before. Not one to settle with a paintbrush and paper, she’s adept in both arranging images, colors, shapes and ideas into intricate shadowboxes that give a brief glimpse into stories that beg to be told but are only hinted at, as well as composing nearly to scale installations that leave the viewer no choice but to be taken to the place she intends them to be.

Her paintings dazzle as well; being mostly deconstructed versions of their respective titles: Dream catcher USA is paint splatter deflecting from an array of colored rectangles shaped like a diamond. Picnic is blue water and a patch of green grass surrounded by blurred and unidentifiable objects. Imagination is definitely a contributing factor to all that Schiele has done, and a certain amount is needed to fully appreciate what she wants the viewer to see.

Floe is a Kinetic Glass Sculpture that was created by four artists and designers from the Royal College of Art, London. The piece is inspired by formations and movement found in nature. Floe, embodies the shape and movement of ice drifting on the surface of the North Atlantic. The glass structure is combined with a simple wave movement and light bringing life to the piece. An interactive element was essential to the project; the audience influences the movement and light intensity with their presence. For more info go here.

Whimsy, color and spatial harmony all collide in John Breed’s A Rainbow of Shoes and Legs for Brueninger. The Brueninger in question is the German shoe salon the installation was intended for, and it’s no wonder, for the bold simplicity of an array of multi-colored shoe clad gams lends itself well to a fashion driven environment. Among the 145 individual legs featured, there is a pale blue strappy sandal, a lime green spiked heel with ruffle embellishments and a lilac wedge. One can almost hear the strains of the Rolling Stones “She’s A Rainbow” playfully caressing the ear.

Louise Aubrie is a New York City based, English musician who crossed over the pond to play her new music in the United States. Aubrie’s authentic post punk pop songs are clearly influenced by The Smiths and The Cure, but are doused with her personal and feminine spin to what is normally an all male emo melancholy fest of hurt feelings and missed opportunities.

Celebrating her album release earlier this month at The Bitter End, Louise Aubrie is working to establish herself in the lower Manhattan music community. Keep and eye out for her music and her lush, sentimental songs.
