Contemporary design is often influenced by nature. Maybe it’s a bearskin rug, or an animal print bedspread. Spanish designer Máximo Riera takes this inspiration to another level with his latest animal-inspired creation, the Tufted Toad Sofa. Riera is notorious for his series of outlandish furniture, ranging from an octopus chair to a walrus chaise. Drawing his inspiration from Pop Art and his travel experiences, Riera brings a distinctive character to the design world.
The Toad sofa camouflages itself as a plush throne with eclectic arm rests from a front-facing view, but when one takes a closer look, it becomes obvious that the sharp prongs are actually talons and the bumpy exterior is really the rough surface of a warty toad. From the back, you can clearly see the rear end of a toad, with its hind legs perfectly perched as if it were ready to leap for a fly. It’s even easy to imagine the sofa as a carnival ride, with the seat serving as an area for steering or driving. The Animal Chair collection remains true to the authentic biological form of the animals, only magnified in size. Not for the conservative decorator.
