What do you get when you wake up in the morning aroused with an erection after a night full of nightmares? What does it feel like to have a twisted fancy that produces beautiful results? Have you ever wanted to look at the beauty of the world through the eyes of person who sees the beauty of insanity?
German born Stefanie Gutheil puts all of these ideas together in a somewhat warped way. Full of dark characters from some nameless abyss merged with some stolen from Tim Burton’s imagination–and a hint of sadomasochism–the artist’s 3rd exhibit in NYC possess frightening sights of Minotaurs and other mythological characters accented with the unknown.
This is what happens when “Yo Gabba Gabba!” meets “Beetlejuice” and then gives birth on an empty canvas. Created by a mind laced with natural THC, all of the paintings’ components tell a story, but, unless you are the creator, they narrate multiple, diverging perspectives.
The ideas of this piece exude the romance of tragedy and the beauty of fantasy. Not all works of art are of perfect bodies with mountains and flowers; sometimes you have to see the beauty in the dark and appreciate the unknown.
