What defines ownership? Must the item be physically ‘present’ for someone to own it? (and to want to own it, for that matter?) These are but a few questions raised by the collaborative project by Lucas Maassen and Raw Color dubbed D/struct. In a world of increasing digitization and virtual transactions, the project brings to mind the changing concept of ownership. It all went down as follows: they literally smashed a total of 60 plastic objects, then re-packaged the small remains to be purchased online. Each package comes with a code which has the 3D digital version of the original item, thus prompting the owner to re-create a new version from its remains. While it may seem ironic to pay a certain price—particularly for shattered pieces—perhaps the fun is in contemplating what, if not how many different things, you could create out of them.
