CHRIS BURDEN’S METROPOLIS

At a glance, Chris Burden’s “Metropolis” appears to be a mere model of a city.  But when turned on, it becomes a living organism full of the sounds and miniature rushing cars, replicating the energy of a real city.   Standing a mere 10 feet tall, “Metropolis” conveys the rigidity and cohesion of its full-sized counterpart, and when the cars are introduced into the landscape, sometimes at speeds around 230 miles per hour, the city reacts like Frankenstein to lightning and becomes instantly animated.
