Rashaad Newsome is a Renaissance artist able to take one idea and interpret it across a wide span of mediums including: collage, music videos, photography, sculpture and installation. His most recent project draws parallels between heraldry in the past– think distant past or even fictional past such as King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table– and the present, think BLING!
Newsome’s project positions the artist as herald, decorating art objects with accolades and imparting them with meaning. For example, Newsome constructs a collages that he custom frames. These pieces resemble family crests or coat of arms, boardered in gilt.
But who better to discuss the work of Newsome than Newsome himself. Check out this video of Newsome discussing his work at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum for their Matrix 161 exhibit.
Blending hip-hop culture and midieval cultural history, Newsome’s work is playful and humorous. He draws a clever connection between the way humans acknowledged accomplishments in the past and the way they do in the present. The difference being that these days, anyone can be their own herald!
