We recently got a chance to chat with Psychic Dancehall.
s.o.t.r.-Tell us about your upcoming release ‘Dreamers’, the new LP thats dropping July 26.
Psychic Dancehall- These are ten songs that Sylvia and I recorded while living together above a theatre in San Diego. We went out a lot at night to strip clubs and gay shows. I think it all had an influence on the songs we were recording at the time. Someone spray painted “Dreamers” across the front of the apartment building and that seemed like a fitting title.
s.o.t.r.-Are you guys fans of Amanda brown (La vampires) and Not Not Fun? The track “Long Lost Lover” from your
7″ single has that whole synth-washed dub sound that reminds me off alot of NNF releases.
Psychic Dancehall- We were not aware of NNF back in December of 2009 when we were living together. I don’t remember there being much dub floating around the underground scene. However, lately I have heard a lot of great dub influenced stuff, especially on Altered Zones. We are big fans of Maria Minerva and Peaking Lights.
s.o.t.r.-Who are some of your main influences?
Psychic Dancehall- Our main influence at the time of the Dreamers album was the theatre we were living above. There were so many eccentric people there creating inspirational performance art every night. Her and I definitely are spiritually aligned with the likes of sixties artists like Joe Meek, Serge Gainsbourg and The Crystals. However, I’d like to think that are music is far more modern than that. There is also a lot of r&b and dub sounds present too like Nu Shooz, Rhianna, and Janet Kay.
s.o.t.r.-Do you guys have any tour plans to push your new album?
I think the best thing for us to do now is to create several special events across the US and Europe that are all unique and desire a considerable amount of creative output.
s.o.t.r.-How is it being part of the Art Fag family?
Psychic Dancehall- Mario and Art Fag is like growing up with three of the coolest dads ever.
