Exuding nocturnal mutations of the occult behind smokescreen timbres of trepidation and ominous foreshadowing, Manchester duo Demdike Stare dips into its sepulcher of imagery to unearth a video for “Hashshashin Chant”, originally off the group’s Voices Of Dust EP, but now available as part of the three piece anthology Tryptych off Modern Love.
Miles Whittaker and Sean Canty is the pair that glares with a Demdike Stare, eliciting the services of cult movie junkie and head of LoveLockandLoad Jonny Redman for the “Hashshashin Chant” video. Obscure scenes dash throughout the video, beckoning memories of 2001: A Space Odyssey’s Technicolor trip through hysteria and A Clockwork Orange’s imposed indoctrination of rebuilding a broken person. The hyper crisp sound quality and reverberating bass fuel an undercurrent of tension and nervousness, building with the animalistic energy of a primal pagan ritual chanting around a fire.
