Tone Set: “Out, out, out” (1982)

A bruising bassline and mournful electronics topped off with a disturbing rant, Tone Set‘s “Out, out, out” might have inspired a young DJ Shadow when the song was aired on college radio in 1982. Hailing from Tempe, Arizona, Tone Set disappeared after rocking university airwaves for a mere 2 years. This was still long enough to catch the ear of Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh, who has been known to name drop the ephemeral synthpunk twosome in interviews. Delicious.
