Zahid Jiwa re-creates the nostalgic vibe of the 80′s wonderfully in his warped vhs montages. He has done videos for James Ferraro and a few other artists on the Olde English Spelling Bee label. We got a chance to talk to him about some of his newer work including a video he recently did for C V L T S. We are also premiering a brand new video from Zahid entitled BLACKBOX 2, watch it below.
s.o.t.r.-What bands have you done videos for? Any particular videos you are partial to?
Zahid Jiwa -I’ve worked on videos for a ton of bands most notably bands on the Olde English Spelling Bee label, but I’ve also done stuff for local bands, friends and of course for my own music. I do alot of stuff under different names so sometimes people might not know that it’s me that’s made it. I’m not really partial to anything I’ve done in the past, in fact I don’t really like to look at any of my old work. I’m usually just looking forward to the next project.
s.o.t.r.-Where do you come across the ‘found’ footage you use in alot of your vhs style montages?
Zahid Jiwa -Most of it is found at thrift stores, garage sales or people’s houses but lately i’ve been trading tapes with other video friends i’ve met online, most notably my friend Chelsey Hoff . Also I will shamefully admit that I sometimes pull clips off of youtube, they’re just too good.
s.o.t.r.-Do you ever shoot your own material for any of your videos, or are they exlusivley made of old vhs clips??
Zahid Jiwa -I’m shooting all the time. I own two barely working VHS cameras and a couple of Hi8′s also. I haven’t gone HD yet. Alot of the time I make footage that I shoot look “found” by bouncing it between two VCR’s before mixing it in with old tapes that I have so that people can’t tell what’s mine and what’s not.
s.o.t.r.-I love the new C V L T S video, what kind of sotware are you using to edit and create your work?
Zahid Jiwa -That video was made with Photoshop and Final Cut Pro. What I use varies depending on what I’m doing but usually it’s just really simple a/v software and hardware.
s.o.t.r.-You seem to be the ‘video artist’ equivalent of the musician James Ferraro. I saw you did a video for him, do you know him personally, or just thru the digitl realms of the internet? Are alot of the relationships with the bands you work with via the internet?
Zahid Jiwa -That’s quite the compliment. I admire James very much and his work is a huge influence on me in alot of ways. I only know James through Olde English Spelling Bee, and I made that video just as a small present for him for providing me with so much great music. He’s such a dynamic artist that his creativity really transcends all mediums, he’s made really wicked videos also in the last year. I really respect him alot.
s.o.t.r.-Can you make me a video for a Tony B. song?
Zahid Jiwa -Sure. Although I’m working on alot of new stuff right now so it might take me a little while!
