SF-Bay Area-based visual artist John Casey is something of a renaissance-era cryptozoologist. He seems to pursue knowledge through experimental vivisection and zoological hearsay. His creatures, rather than the hallucinations of a drunken rustic, are permutations of human form that he describes as “little exorcisms,” undesirable parts of himself that transfers to paper.
His grotesque creatures mix a distinct humanism as well as the vulnerability and melancholy that allows us to empathize with monsters such as Frankenstein. No two are the same and taken all together they create something of a diverse community of the alone not far removed from your daily subway commute. He is represented by Swarm Gallery in Oakland, CA.
