Just when I thought girl rock was dead, along comes Hilly Eye. The Brooklyn-based band is comprised of two lasses: Amy Klein, of Titus Andronicus; and her partner-in-crime, Catherine Tung. After I got my hands on their debut EP, Fireworks, I was immediately taken back to the days of dancing in my bedroom to Sleater-Kinney, all while rockin’ my oxblood Docs, of course. In fact, Klein has been quoted as saying their sound is like “Sleater-Kinney meets Lightning Bolt.” Um, yeah, it is.
With Klein on guitar, Tung on drums, and both girls doing vocals, the combination is a lo-fi, noisy explosion that is reminiscent of the guitar-driven, raunchy sounds of the Riot Grrrl era, but with an edge that is less tattered and a bit more refined. And maybe I’ve been listening to too much Deerhoof, but the vocals on “Double Dutch,” has me thinking of Satomi Matsuzaki, and I love that.
The four-track, Fireworks, is unexpected and fun; it breathes fresh life into a music scene that is mostly a boys’ club and stands toe to toe with the best of them.
