According to their website, Chicago based Houses created their beautifully comforting album All Night not in the coldness of a midwestern winter, but in the warmth of the Pacific Island sun and it shows through the albums’ warm sounds. Houses is the project of one man, (with some help from his girlfriend on Soak it Up) and his creativity put Houses on par with the best artists coming out of the current ambient scene (hedging my bets that 2011 is the year ambient takes center stage).
October saw the release of Houses’ first album All Night (lefse records) and although the tracks fall a bit short time wise for typical atmospheric music, they still maintain a powerful quality as they seamless move from beginning to end. Reds though is perhaps the most emotionally stirring due to the earnest deja-vuesque lyrics. Houses’ tenor (with traces of backing soprano) over a steady clap and effortless piano progression fashions a comforting blanket for in which the listener to wrap themselves up in. Although the theme of endless love creates a more slow-tempo mood, the beats are fairly upbeat constructing a tour-de force of electro-ambient pop. Houses don’t have any immediate tour dates, but if you are in Chicago on January 11th be sure to check out their show at Lincoln Hall.
