Gabriel Dawe’s mix media art installations look like they are taking flight. At the very least, they look like kaleidoscopic mirages that draw the eye in many different directions. Utilizing wood, thread and nails, stuff that MacGuyver could use to fashion a boat or nuclear bomb out of, Dawe takes these simple materials and creates a fanciful, whimsical installation that appear to be different from every angle. From one spot, it’s a fan opening up but from another it may seem like a colourful house.
Works of art like this force you to be an active participant in the piece itself. Passivity is not allowed when observing this kind of art because these pieces dictate that you think critically when it comes to your surroundings and open up your imagination.
