Mp3: Wild Nothing’s New EP Golden Haze

Wild Nothing-Your Rabbit Feet

2010 proved an excellent year for newcomer Wild Nothing with the release of the critically hailed debut Gemini and judging by the recent released EP Golden Haze, 2011 is looking bright as well. Wild Nothing, the brainchild of Jack Tatum hails from lower Virginia but his dreamy, swirling sound places him in a more other worldly locale. Golden Haze follows Gemini its chill wave flavoring, but Tatum keeps himself from being one-note with thoughtful and well-crafted lyrics and beats.

The EP’s first track, Golden Haze beings quietly but quickly builds up as it creates a wall of comforting sound from the simple beat and dancing guitar progression. Tatum’s singing style proves strong and clear throughout as his lyrics of “wild heart surrender to me/what does it take to be like you?/golden haze hold out for days/haven’t seen you haven’t seen anyone” create a relaxing dream space for the listener.

Your Rabbit Feet standouts against the EP’s other six songs due to the more aggressive sound and desire filled lyrics. Tatum’s voice loses some of its sweet adolescent edge with the passionate lines of “it was the loneliest night I ever knew/but it was lonely for you love”. Compared to Golden Daze, the vocals have slightly increased reverb and the drums are more rock as opposed to Golden Daze’s synth pop beat. It was refreshing to hear Tatum execute a harder sound while still maintaining a wonderfully atmospheric vibe. Wild Nothing will be undergoing an extensive tour (dates below) with Abe Vigoda later this winter.
