Leila Masharipova and Sasha Borodinova, like Cyndi Lauper, just want to have fun. From Moscow, these haphazard youths record their adventures by means of photography, an added pair of perverted eyes, if you will. The grainy low-fi images are nostalgic, but not in a pretentious “I-go-to-art-school-and-am-painfully-hip” kind of way: they are honest, blunt, and best of all, contain a freedom that is hard to come by. We are given an almost full back stage pass to their lives, friends, perspectives and interests, a blessing usually only reserved for vain friends we know on Facebook (who are usually VERY uninteresting anyway).
Whilst some photos in their collection work, others don’t, and this contrasting aesthetic adds to the authenticity of their “we couldn’t give a FUCK” attitude to the world. Moments of frailty, misery and injury are placed next to times of joy, laughter and intimacy, creating a portrait of youth culture in Moscow that would be difficult, if not impossible, to tap into as a tourist. Feel like branding a car? Sure! Or how about trying on my super high red shoes? No problem, do whatever you want. I don’t care.
