Lesser Gonzales Alvarez is a Baltimore-based Artist and Musician with a wicked track record. His approach to creativity spans multiple media and whilst his music is colored with Folk influences, his early paintings are cartoon-esque street art. Alvarez paints on everything from wooden board, to canvas, to other paintings – his work titled “France” is one such example. Aliens seems to be invading the European city, beams of light shining down from UFOs, bizarre creatures sauntering about – whilst lines extend beyond the canvas frame onto the walls it is mounted to.
Some of Alvarez’s characters appear transported into the current time from the 1950s. Two-dimensional and suggestive, these figures are obscured and mashed together like a well thought out DJ set. The rainbow with a boot is most definitely my favorite: Alvarez creates works that engage brilliantly with their surrounds, regardless of the medium he chooses.
