I do recall a famous advertising campaign that went something along the lines of: “Don’t you love it when things just work?” This is most definitely the case for Yannick Calvez, Lémuel Malicoutis, and Baptiste Alchourroun, who make up the Quebec-based French artist collective Château-vacant.
Each member has their own role and the strength of the collective lies in the shared aesthetic, which is entirely non-digital, not doubt a rareity these days. The illustrations by Baptiste resonate subtly with the photographs by Yannick, and the video animations by Lémuel intersect both. Their ideas are very much grounded in the need for the concrete, tactile and touchable – the computer acts as merely a compositioning tool, allowing the work of all three collaborators to be joined.
Perusing through their body of work, you can feel the synergies buzzing through – this trio is the one to watch.
