Despite the slightly masculine name, Gregory and the Hawk, soars, as if weightless in comparison to other bands in its genre. Meredith Godreau is the voice and songwriter behind Gregory and the Hawk, and the only word that can accurately describe her heavenly voice is captivating.
Her new album, Leche, is beautifully written and complimented with her divinely girlish voice: soft, heart-warming, and aching when necessary. Just as with her previous releases, Godreau manages to maintain a happy balance between writing honest, heart-felt words, putting them into song with her amazing voice, but without letting either of the two parts outshine the other.
Although there is a sense of maturity both musically and lyrically on Leche, in comparison to 2008’s Moenie and Kitchi, Godreau’s voice remains refreshing and unique. And it’s this caliber of vocals that compliment such endearing lines like: “I really wanna go to bed/With the feeling in my chest/That we lost again/But this time for the best/I wanna know/Do I smooth your checkered past,” from the album’s first song, “For the Best.” Song after song is another display of dreamy acoustics; and honestly, you will find a no more perfect rainy day album.
In support of Leche, Gregory and the Hawk is currently on tour and will continue to tour in 2011 with dates that will include Mice Parade.
