Maartje Folkeringa’s foam sculptures are eerie though in an entrancing, thoughtful kind of way. These foam sculptures capture humanness in post-mortem. It’s a bit of an odd way of looking at them but their poses, facial expressions and even the vacant look in the eyes of these pieces suggest a sort of transcending view of life; that their decaying bodies won’t be gone completely. Most of these figures looked pissed off or moody in a hilarious kind of way, especially the specific poses they are set in as well as the arch of their brows, but it is a kind of celebratory view on life and how death and decay aren’t always such scary notions. Having said that, the elderly lady in the bathing suit with the lizard is still pretty creepy.
