MUSIC: Pigeons’ Provide the Vehicle to Escape the Harshness of Everyday Life

Within a minute of listening to the smoothly sultry “The Postcard” off of Bronx-based Pigeons tour single Visions of the Valley, I’m ready to pack my bags, catch the next flight to Paris, hunker down in a cafe and chain-smoke as I read Flaubert. The smoky, mature voice emanating from singer Wednesday Knudsen, layered alongside an impossibly sexy guitar riff and smooth back percussion brings to mind Air’s amazingly intimate “Playground Love”. My continual penchant to francocentric references made sense upon learning that the couple spent time in Paris before calling the Bronx home. The influence the city of lights had on them is underlying thread heard throughout their second record Si Faustine and forthcoming Liasons.

The atmospheric essence of Pigeons’ sound emerges from their employment of an electric guitar, flute, saxophone, and drum machine. Guitar riffs and Knudsen’s voice tend to take center stage while the other instruments provide the necessary accents needed to bring forth the group’s ethereal quality. Although Si Faustine’s “Lacs” is a completely flute-drive track providing no vocals and minimal guitar. It has a very renaissance, courtly feel to it, making it a very esoteric track offered by an already mysterious band.

Pigeons’ are at their best when producing straight-forward, beautiful melodies that allow Knudsen’s voice to shine. Si Faustine has more of a sweet, melodious vibe to it than the sensuous one heard on Liasons. Pigeons ability to successfully pull off both ends of this spectrum displays the depth of their musical creativity and ability. The impossibly delicate love song “Missing You” is a standout track on Si Faustine and is reminiscent of the earnestly heard in folk singer Kath Bloom’s “Come Here”. Knudsen provides more distinction to her voice on the track, allowing the charming lyrics  “there is no air when you where there I know…I held my breath but I never thought to tell you so” to be heard. The sweetness and innocence brought forth in the lyrics is refreshing against all the cynicism heard in daily life. Pigeons’ ability to remove their listeners from the ugliness of the everyday and into a dream-like space highlights the important role music plays in people’s psyche. Music is such a personal part of a person because of the comfort it offers and Pigeons have mastered this in their absorbing music.

The single “No Other Way” off of their new release Liasons (out November 16th) displays a more mature, downtempo sound. This further emphasizes the dreamy, airy sound heard on Si Faustine, but adds a more jazz-like sound. “No Other Way” shows this developed sound in its utilization of the saxophone, which adds a wonderfully sexy aspect to the band’s ambient sound. Judging by the group’s ability on Si Faustine to successful create a distinct mood, I am very curious and excited to hear the aura they chose to execute on Liasons.

Pigeons are currently touring to promote the release of Liasons (dates provided below) and I have a feeling they are a great band to see live considering their capacity to engineer a romantic and reflective mood on their albums. Either way Si Faustine and Liasons are must for anyone who enjoys beautifully atmospheric music.
