My favorite album of 2008, hands down, was Hometowns by the Rural Alberta Advantage. And two years later, it’s still a favorite… in fact I put it up there with Neutral Milk Hotel’s In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. Similarly to NMH’s Jeff Mangum, RAA’s Nils Edenloff has one of those gorgeously infectious voices, and the rare gift to not only compose a perfect pop song, but the perfect love song, too.
Since 2008, the band has developed a sizeable following and has toured widely – they also landed themselves on Omaha-based (and indie rock world royalty) Saddle Creek Records. Finally, their much-anticipated sophomore album is set to release sometime in early 2011. In support of the new record, RAA will be starting the European leg of their tour which will eventually make its way back east, with a performance I know I’ll be at, in New York City on January 12th.
Not only is Hometowns a near-perfect record, but their live shows are great, too. I’ve seen them close to 15 times, so I’m speaking from a wee bit of experience.
