Johannes Vogl’s avant-garde piece of art entitled “Swing” is a head scratcher. The video is 5 minutes and few seconds long of a swing set by itself in a field with a burning tire swing attached to it. It is a thoughtful and provocative piece because of its lack of sound and the image of a burning tire, slowly consumed by the flame and turning into billowing, thick smoke. The fire and swing are in unison from the outset until the flame engulfs the entire tire, even setting the ground below it on fire. When the tire is finally fully drowned by the fire and falls to the ground, it is a slightly heartbreaking and unsettling sight to see. The power of fire is focused here but who knew a charred tire could evoke such feelings of vulnerability and loss?
