Jenny and Johnny is Jenny Lewis and Johnny Rice . I didn’t know exactly what to expect, but if I had expected something, they would have delivered it. They played an energetic and lively blend of “standard indie rock” with some old (a la Patsy Cline) country sensibilities. Their performance certainly had much more in common with Rilo Kiley than Jenny’s solo efforts.
The vocal duties switched back between Jenny and Johnny, both of who delivered an energetic and passionate performance. For one song, the drummer and second guitarist left the stage, and Jenny and Johnny did a romantic duet.
Jenny and Johnny played a song that Jenny wrote for Johnny for “Valentines day ‘08,”; so when I found out they were a couple it made sense that their chemistry worked well together. The drummer is also the drummer for Rilo Kiley, and I have no doubts that the second guitarist is also musically close to the rest of them, because the chemistry and cohesiveness they delivered on stage showed no other possibilities.
