Based out of Kansai, Japan, Ice cream Shout is a seemingly teen-friendly band that has quite a bit of maturity behind their sickly sweet synth tunes. The outfit began as a Mika and Bob, according to their blog, as a duo instead of a fully fledged group. The band expanded in the coming years to incorporate an array of new members, new instruments, thus, new sounds. In 2009, they released their self-titled debut. However, they scored big before their debut when their cover of a Sound of Arrow’s “Danger” was used on the teen drama Gossip Girl.
Their songs are reminders of teen sweetness in a time in indie rock when capturing the teenage experience is the interest of many musicians. This group, however, provide the Japanese teen vibe. Though their sound is heavily reliant on synth and enhanced 80s power beats, it still remains organic at its core. The fast paced sound may be contributed to their surroundings in Japan. In any case, their sound is danceable, teen influenced complete with heart wrenching vocals meshed with pop beats on the song “Tattoed Tears.”
