Simply, Shark? is badass. The Brooklyn-based band is a low-fi, tangy, contagious explosion that will have you humming their songs for hours. Gorgeous baritone vocals similar to Joy Division’s late lead singer, Ian Curtis, fill each track giving them a gloriously disturbing appeal; and the lyrics? Well, they’re ridiculously fun. For example in “Audi5K,” you kinda get addicted to the chorus: “I don’t wanna drive your Audi/I don’t wanna drive your Audi/I don’t wanna drive your Audi/I just wanna be your friend.”
With their short, quirky songs, Shark? is ideal for the ADD crowd out there, and their electronica/garage sound with a splash of bizarre makes them a feast for the ears indeed. And they’re busy lil’ bees, too, having put out three albums this calendar year alone; okay so maybe 2HOT4LIPS is technically just an EP, but still… both School Night (May 2010) and Noise Maker (January 2010) are pretty close to full-length.
So give Shark? a chance this summer. This is where a Jaws pun would be appropriate, but sometimes it’s better to refrain. Listen to their albums here, and when you’re good and ready go East and see them on tour.
