MP3: The Acorn Will Not Be Misplaced- New Album, No Ghost, Proves It So

The Acorn No Ghost cover 300x300 MP3: The Acorn Will Not Be Misplaced New Album, No Ghost, Proves It So

Straddling the lines between rock and folk is where you’ll find The Acorn… and they do it quite well. Since 2003 the band has been fronted by Rolf Klausener, while other members have come and gone, but for now their lineup of band members seems to be staying still long enough to not only put out a new album, No Ghost, but to also head out on a mini-tour.

No Ghost is the fourth full-length from the Canadian band. Lyrics are Klausener’s strength (2007’s Glory Hope Mountain was not only based on the life of Klausener’s mother, but was critically acclaimed for the writing) and he proves this to be fact with this latest album. The highlights are “Restoration” and “Misplaced” which are perfectly matched up back-to-back and a great display of not only Klausener’s lyrical gift, but how far the musical parameters reach on this effort: from uplifting and danceable, to a gentler wistful song that demands the volume be turned up so you can hear what is being sung.

Another repeat-worthy song is “Slippery When Wet,” which also appeared on last year’s Friends in Bellwood II compilation. It’s beautifully written and quintessential folk in its guitar and melodic vocals:  “In our spin, in our spin/The tangle that I left you in…And oh the love I thought we had/The tire tread that slips when wet…”

Along with their original pieces, The Acorns aren’t afraid to get their friends involved either. The album also includes two remixes: “Crossed Wires,” by fellow Canadians Born Ruffians, and the title track “No Ghost,” by London’s Four Tet – and each remix is so good, it almost rivals the original.

The Acorns stay close to home with their upcoming tour and will only be making the rounds in Canada… for now anyway.
