It’s impossible to say what exactly Walking Sleep is going for, and maybe that’s what makes them so alluring. If you combined The Strokes with Bishop Allen you may get somewhere close, but Walking Sleep has developed a sound all its own. Dark lyrics paired with upbeat melodies hark of 80s acts like Echo and the Bunnymen and The Smiths, and Walking Sleep manages to do this and more. Originally formed under the name The Flying Tourbillon Orchestra, it’s easy to see how classic influences have seeped into this band’s style. It’s melodic and obnoxiously easy to listen to, but it’s not fluff and it doesn’t take itself for granted—“The Cause” is fun but redeeming, possibly well played on a Halloween night. “In A Dream” is slightly tragic but also includes a nice little funk groove and some triangle tinks, and like much of the band’s other works creates a polarized dichotomy that is completely irresistible.
They’ve just released their new album, Measures, released May 25th of thsi year.
