Pitchfork 2010: Where to start

Pitchfork+Music+Festival+2010+PMF10logo 4C Pitchfork 2010: Where to start
Kicking off this year’s coverage of Pitchfork Music Festival is what I have deemed the “Pitchfork Quicklist.” Looking at the list of bands playing Pitchfork this year is probably one of the most overwhelming things I’ve done in years. For many, difficult choices are everywhere, while, for others, it’s just a jumble of undiscovered bands laden with old classics. Whatever the case is for you, I have compiled a list of suggestions based on broad music categories.  A complete schedule will follow all suggestions, alongside a very crude “bubble-style” outline that you can’t find on Pitchfork’s website.

For fans of Wilco, Fleet Foxes, Frightened Rabbit; for those taking their dad with them to the festival; for those suffering from a terrible PBR hangover from Friday/Saturday partying, we present…
The “Folk” List
or The “Dad-Rock” Player’s Special
FRIDAY: Sharon Van Etten, The Tallest Man on Earth, Broken Social Scene, Modest Mouse
SATURDAY: Free Energy, Netherfriends, Sonny & the Sunsets, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion (though, in all honesty, this could get a little rowdy, folks!), Wolf Parade, Panda Bear
SUNDAY: Cass McCombs, Beach House, Local Natives, St. Vincent, Here We Go Magic, Pavement (another debatable thing, but everyone loves Pavement, so I will just use that as a qualifying factor)

For rap enthusiasts attending  for Raekwon or Big Boi, not knowing what else to see; for those looking to be weirded out,  we present…
The “Wu-Tangers” Residual Plan
or The “Mix” Mix
FRIDAY: El-P, Liars, Hannibal Buress, Michael Showalter, Broken Social Scene
SATURDAY: Kurt Vile, Titus Andronicus, Raekwon, Why?, Bear in Heaven, Freddie Gibbs, LCD Soundsystem
SUNDAY: Alla, Girls, Beach House, Lightening Bolt, Major Lazer, Big Boi

For those coming to the fest who just love to dance, or for the moms in attendance, only here to see Robyn (“I hope she plays some of her late 90s jams, they really help me do laundry and yell at my kids.”), we present…
The “POP IS DEAD” Not-Quite Pop Extravaganza Hotlist

FRIDAY: Liars, Robyn, Modest Mouse
SATURDAY: Free Energy, Real Estate, Titus Andronicus, Smith Westerns, Wolf Parade, Panda Bear, LCD Soundsystem
SUNDAY: Best Coast, Girls, Surfer Blood, Sleigh Bells

For snobs of all genre-associations (we salute you!), we present…
The “I Can’t Believe It’s Not on My Blog for Free Download” Trek Through the New Year
or The “Electron(ica)” Nerd Jam Power Weekend
FRIDAY: Liars, Robyn
SATURDAY: Free Energy, Delorean, Titus Andronicus, Dam-Funk, Bear in Heaven, Panda Bear (AnCo 4evr), LCD Soundsystem
SUNDAY: Cave, Lightning Bolt, Major Lazer, Neon Indian

Finally, my personal plan of action, and the only acceptable route…
The “Greatest Hits” Hit List of Hits
FRIDAY: Tallest Man on Earth, Liars, Michael Showalter, Broken Social Scene, Modest Mouse
SATURDAY: Free Energy, Sonny & the Sunsets, Real Estate, Kurt Vile, Titus Andronicus, Raekwon, Smith Westerns, John Spencer Blues Explosion, Why?, Panda Bear, Freddie Gibbs, LCD Soundsystem
SUNDAY: Cave, Best Coast, Girls, Beach House, Lightning Bolt, Surfer Blood, St. Vincent, Here We Go Magic, Neon Indian, Big Boi, Pavement

Throughout the week, I will be highlighting select bands and offering other content in preparation for the festival.
