Growing up sucks, but Tokyo Police Club do it so well. Their second full-length album, Champ, starts with the phenomenal song “Favorite Food,” and when you hear the lyrics “Let the sugar melt down your throat/Cause you know it’s sweet getting old,” you realize they just put themselves in that rare group of bands whose sophomore album is just as perfect as their first.
In 2008, the band released, Elephant Shell, an ideal example of what you want to hear in a garage/pop rock band. Who didn’t listen to “Your English is Good,” on repeat all summer long that year?
With Champ, the Canadian band has clearly aged a wee bit. Their sound is more refined, more pulled together, but without losing that coveted raunchy garage sound that so many bands just can’t pull off as effortlessly as Tokyo Police Club. Lead singer, Dave Monks, still coos with the same quirky lyrics that fans became used to on Elephant Shell, but there is a sense of maturity on Champ that is evident throughout the entire album…and it’s a beautiful maturity.
Tokyo Police Club are on tour all summer. The first part of the summer they’re opening for Passion Pit (every show is sold out), but then they make the rounds on their own…so there will be plenty of time to see them live.
