Not Not Fun records is certainly home to some crazy cats. Unsatisfied with the talents of afrobeat pranksters Pocahaunted and Sun Araw, they have recently secured the talents of High Wolf. High Wolf is, shall we say, enigmatic. Apparently some French dude obsessed with contorting the timbre of ethnic instruments through the wonders of magnetic tape, he has released a limited number of hand-numbered cassette only albums and collaborations on obscure labels (such as Winged Sun). During live shows High Wolf insists on covering his face with a terrifying white plastic mask. When approached by one giddy fan, he was heard to snarl ‘Touch the mask and I’ll cut you!’ It’s best to leave him hunched over, gibbering into a microphone and maniacally twiddling his effects peddles.
High Wolf’s debut LP, Ascension, has been made available online: listen here. This should appeal to fans of Africa 70 and Bitches Brew. High Wolf has assembled layers upon layers of bizarre tropical tracks and added his own embellishments of tape loop wizadry. Fela Kuti is an obvious reference point, but Ascension refuses to be pigeonholed. This isn’t afrobeat or electronica or even tape loop collage; it’s a one-way ticket into the psychedelic jungle.
