Another lo-fi discovery from Captured Tracks Records but be warned – this is not the usual sun-warmed dose of surf-bop. You can almost tell elusive Brooklyn outfit Minks recorded “Funeral Song” last winter – the Peter Hook style bass, that icy wavering synth line: more than a tinge of Coldwave. Oh yeah, and the whole “So long summertime not coming back” chorus thing. But now it’s spring, Minks have signed to captured tracks and Funeral Song is getting the 7-inch release it deserves! The lead singer [whoever he is – Minks prefer to keep their identities shrouded in mystery, y’see. Myspace pics find them either: a) draped in shimmering silver cloths, or b) with their heads eerily removed], on the opening lines, manages an excellent impression of Yukihiro Takahashi making a drunken phonecall from a Cure gig. All slurs are dropped for the chorus that laments lost sunrays, gratifyingly tracing the course of the lilting synth.
